A Quiet Summer Retreat: Why You Should Visit These 5 Underrated U.S. Cities This July

While social media might lead you to believe otherwise, a phenomenal summer escape doesn’t necessarily require an over-the-top, indulgent experience.

Some of my most cherished breaks have been modestly priced, peaceful urban interludes I’ve savored alongside loved ones or embarked upon solo sightseeing adventures – if the idea resonates with you, it’s probably not the glossy brochures touting Ibiza, Mykonos, or Bali as must-visit destinations that will spark your interest.

So, therefore are you really getting instead?

The good news is that you can draw inspiration from the latest trends report, which highlights some of the most underrated destinations across the country for a July getaway – no, places like New York, Miami, Las Vegas, Orlando, and Seattle aren’t on this list.

Saratoga Springs, Nyc

While New York’s iconic status is undeniable, its proximity to other incredible destinations can’t be ignored, making it all the more surprising that these lesser-known gems continue to fly under the radar?

This summer, push beyond your comfort zone and reach new heights?

This summer, experience the rich heritage of Saratoga’s equine legacy by arriving in time for the highly anticipated return of the storied Saratoga racecourse, commencing on July 11th. This revered event dates back to 1863, offering a unique opportunity to relive and celebrate the region’s iconic horse racing tradition.

In Saratoga Springs, renowned for its rejuvenating spas and vibrant arts community, the perfect blend of relaxation and entertainment awaits anyone seeking an ideal getaway.

Leadville, Colorado

Considering a more adventurous getaway? Then look no further than Leadville, where the great outdoors awaits.

Perched at an elevation of 10,152 feet within the majestic Rocky Mountains, this former mining town offers a unique blend of historic charm and thrilling adventure, a combination that few well-traveled destinations can match.

Hike over the Mineral Belt Trail, get picnicking near Turquoise Lake, and just take a scenic train trip through Leadville Colorado & Southern Railroad – if all of that doesn’t make one feel in track with America’s jaw-dropping nature, we don’t know what will.

Lancaster, California

Lacking momentum to follow up on the incredible experience of our recent travel photography adventure.

A good digital camera and a trip to Lancaster’s stunning poppy fields – exactly what the doctor ordered.

While developing your approach through Lancaster, be mindful not to overlook the rich cultural heritage and natural beauty on offer – from the Aerospace Walk of Honor to the Prime Desert Woodland preserve, and the Lancaster Performing Arts Center – an incredible blend of traditions that will leave you in awe.

Bangor, Maine

While Bangor’s picturesque charm is undeniable, there’s more to this captivating destination than initially meets the eye. As a growing number of like-minded travelers begin to discover its hidden gems, it’s only a matter of time before the city becomes a hotbed of mass tourism. Seize the opportunity to experience all that Bangor has to offer while it still remains off the beaten path?

For fans of the masterful storyteller Stephen King, this location has long held a special allure – not only is it the author’s hometown, but it’s also a destination where you can embark on an authentic Stephen King tour, traversing the key sites that inspired his most iconic works, including his majestic Victorian mansion and other locations that have left an indelible mark on his writing.

While others can indulge in leisure activities such as kayaking on the scenic Penobscot River, discovering the wonders of Acadia National Park, or immersing themselves in local culture at one of the numerous seasonal events, the crowning jewel remains the esteemed Bangor State Fair.

Wenatchee, Washington

As Seattle basks in its reputation as America’s crown jewel, it’s hardly unexpected that lesser-known Washington destinations are struggling to capture a fraction of the attention.

While exploring the more popular areas of Washington state has its perks, venturing off the beaten path to discover the serene beauty of the Wenatchee might just be an unexpectedly rewarding experience.

Dubbed the “apple capital of the world,” this picturesque city is a real-life cinematic treasure, its rolling orchards and lush landscapes conjuring images of a classic Hollywood set.

Whether considering a winter getaway or not, Wenatchee offers an array of activities year-round, including wine and cider tastings. When the weather permits, explore Riverfront Park on a leisurely cycle trip, stroll through the serene surroundings of Ohme Gardens, or experience the thrill of jet skiing on the Columbia River.
